Influence of Reggae on the Composition of the Police

Reggae is one of among the music folks that has remained popular and results from traditions, experiences and emotions of people. Its origin is Jamaica where artists used it express distress and desire for freedom having remained under colony for long periods. Most other regions with time adopted reggae tunes to their bands. This paper will focus on the influence of reggae on the kind of composition done by The Police.

The Police is a band formed in 1977 in London, United Kingdom by three members including Sting who was the lead vocalist, songwriter and bass guitar player, Andy Summers played the guitar and Copeland played percussion and the drums. From their songs, it is clear that they adopted a lot from reggae and their use of bass guitar, drums and guitar using reggae rhythms shows of how of influence the genre was to their song composition. The paper will focus on the songs composed by the Police and how much they had adopted from reggae to combine with their former punk to stand out in their performance and composition. Reggae is one of the music genre that has remained popular and relevant for long time with great following and acceptance among many individuals across the world. Some of their songs actually composed of reggae music from Jamaicans for instance, “So Lonely” had the chorus from Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry.” The Police composed several songs with reggae-like characteristics and will be analyzed in the final paper to establish the influence on the kind of composition the band had.
