film review for Michael Smith

Arabic 330 - Film Review Guidelines

  1. A brief introduction about the filmmaker and his/her existing body of work.

  2. A brief description of the film and any pertinent background information.

  3. Your opinion about the impact and/or quality of the film, which usually touches on a theme or themes covered in the film for the purpose of convincing the reader of the review that it's a worthy cinematic work (or explain why it failed in this respect if that's what you think). Personal opinions aren’t usually stated directly.

  4. A brief summary of some plot and character details, that also highlights some filming features you thought were handled well (or not handled well). You may also continue to discuss the theme or themes in this section if it adds to the plot and character discussion. Plot details presented should not give away too much information, such as outcomes relating to major conflicts or developments, especially resolutions or endings.

  5. A conclusion of the entire review, giving your closing remarks and final impressions about the film. This sometimes includes a tactful cliffhanger or something similar to draw the reader in.

  • Required length: 750-1000 words

  • No first person, do not indent for paragraphs, use header below, double space

  • You do not need to include quotes, but if you do, no citation is necessary. If a quote is used, it should be especially powerful and pertinent to what you’re discussing, really helping to drive the point home.

  • You should not have to say outright that you think it is a good work or not, personal opinions and impressions are usually implied as opposed to being stated directly.

An A paper will do all of these things in a smooth fashion, interweaving the summary and examples with the highlighted points you're making about the film, without giving away too much information about the plot but sharing just enough to ensure the reader gets a clear idea of the topic or topics the film covers along with its most prominent features and themes.

Header and format for the film review should be as follows:
