WEEK 3-5 (Steps 1, 2,3)

STEP 1: Narrowing and Focusing your Topic

(You may use the Reference Section/E-library of JUC or other sources—see the list above.)

Topic Choice: # ______

STEP 2: Previewing and Reading your Sources

You must choose a minimum of 4 sources. You may use more sources if you like.

You must preview the sources by looking at titles, headings, subheadings, tables of contents, abstracts, descriptors, etc. to discover whether they can be used in your report. You can ask your instructor specific questions, about the sources, after you have previewed them, BUT it is NOT the instructor’s responsibility to preview the source.

This part of the process takes a lot of time. There is no short cut. You must be prepared to spend many hours reading at this stage.

Try to find sources that have an author’s name, a title, a periodical/document name, and a date of publication.

List of Sources: (You can take notes here. You can write the Source Cards now or later.)

NOTE: You must also write 1 source card for each source you intend to use. If you have 4 sources, you will write 4 source cards.

Special Note on Previewing and Reading Sources (See Step 5 for more information)

When you preview your sources and when you begin critically reading your sources, you should ANNOTATE them. Below is an example of 1 annotation in a source. Each article should have many annotations.
