"The Mystery of Love & Sex" (3 stars)

April 13, 7.30 pm, 2017

Gillian Theatre at Writers Theatre, 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe

Marti Lyons' production

The play revolves around the theme of love. The play is about two young people a male and lady who whirl around in the first act of Bathsheba’s Doran’s compassionate. The play, “The Mystery of Love & Sex,” opened Thursday night at Writers Theater in Glencoe. In this particular play, we are introduced to what we call soul mates. The play presents an existing aspect of boy and girl friendship at childhood. However, at a particular stage of developments, these childhood friends start fantasizing and dreaming about their future. From such fantasies, the two becomes so close while learning together and sharing their dreams and mysteries. As a result, dating between these two individuals however because an issue of concern since it will feel like your dating or hang out with your sibling. A weirder scenario in the case of dating.

The plot of this particular play is fantastic. The orderly flow of events right from the start makes everything exciting. The series of incidents in this play tries to reveal some of our behaviors in our childhood. The mysteries we fantasize and engage in as we grow to become adults. In the play, our soulmates are likely to stimulate our growth in matters of love, sex, and self-actualization. As both Charlotte (Hayley Burgess) and Jonny (Travis Turner) head off to college, they are exploring their sexuality trying to figure out if they are gay. The acts presented by Charlotte in the play, she gets naked in the dorm room and describes herself as a "test case for his stubborn virginity."

From the play, Charlotte seems to be much complicated. In fact, one could agree and sympathize with the play writer that Charlotte is extremely confused. She is not capable of evaluating Jonny and thus goes ahead to do her crazy actions to convince Jonny to become part of her discovery. From what is experienced between these two young people, we can reflect such a scenario to a Jewish girl and an African-American boy who secretly love each other. To satisfy the audience, Act 2 of the play further things become much exciting since Jonny is adopted by Charlotte's parents. This adoption changes everything in the play, maybe the audience was expecting the two to fall in love afterward, but the events in Act 2 disapproves their perceptions.

With time, Jonny slightly gives attention to Charlotte since he is much focused and interested in professional activities. As a result, the affectionate between this two fades away, and a conflict tends to occur between these two. Charlotte sees it as the older feeling being betrayed by Jonny after all her support and love for him. This scenario makes Jonny undecided, in fact, it is a dilemma situation for him. Though one can judge that the situation is fair on both sides, neither Jonny nor Charlotte sees it that way.

The play is staged on real life events that occur in our daily lives. The play is staged with simplicity, in Writers’ small space though. The play displays the director’s skills in casting. The costumes define the flow of this particular play. The dressing code in the play entirely stages the significant of the play, in particular among the younger generation. The way Turner plays his character makes everything exciting about the play. Through Turner, we can evaluate the mysteries to probe.
