Problem Statement

To complete a project assigned to our company within the stipulated deadline, all staff members will be required to work extra hours. Failure to complete the tender in time will cost the company significant losses. However, most of the staff members live far from the company premises and hence working late would be a huge challenge. This is because the staff members are showing resistance to working late since they are worried about their security while going home. The management needs to come up with a solution to this challenge so as to ensure completion of this tender.

Overview of Alternatives

There are two alternatives in which the company can solve the issue. The first alternative is through paying accommodation fee at premises near the company for staff members who live far from company premises. This will require the staff member to live near shift from their homes to premises near the company until the project they are working on is completed. Another solution to the problem would require the management to procure a company bus which will be used to take the staff members to their respective homes after they leave work during the late hours. This two alternatives should be evaluated carefully by the management to determine which one will best benefit the company.

Criteria

To ensure the two alternatives are adequately evaluated certain criteria will be used. The first criteria would be cost (Triantaphyllou, 2000). Buying a bus will involve higher cost as compared to paying booking rentals for staff members who live far from the work premises. However, some staff members may be unwilling to live far from their families since the project’s completion could take long. The other criteria would be durability. Renting premises for staff members may not be a durable solution since in case the company gets another tender of the same nature it would require to pay accommodation fee for staff members again. However, in buying a company bus, the company will only do this once since a bus is durable and can be used another time in case of such a situation. Another criterion used is desirability. Most staff members would prefer buying a bus since they would get a chance to see their families every day. However, with renting rooms for the staff member, they will only see their families on weekends or the end of the month, and hence they would desire to purchase a bus more. Another criterion is time for implementation. The process of procuring a bus may take long since various board meetings must be held to determine which type of vehicle and budget for buying a bus. However, finding accommodation for staff members living far from work premises is easy and time taken to implement this is quite short. Nevertheless, the process of procuring a bus could be speeded up since the situation requires a fast solution. Another criterion is efficiency. Buying a bus is more efficient since it will save the company more money. This is because a bus could be reused in case such a situation occurs again. The bus could also be used for other company purposes such as transporting material and also the company can rent it out whenever it is not in use. On the other hand getting accommodation for staff members is not a lasting solution, and hence it is not efficient for both the company and the staff members.

Methods

To determine the most appropriate alternative to solve the solution, I will conduct a research after which I will deliver the results, my employer. The first method would be the use of questionnaires (Shamoo & Resnik, 2009). Here I will write down several questions in regards to which alternative is best, either purchasing a bus or accommodation within the entire project period. The staff members will air their opinions on which method will work best for them hence helping me discover which method is most desirable. I will also conduct research on cost that will be incurred for both alternative and determine which is more economical. Here I will visit the nearby accommodation building and get their rental fees. I will also research on the various models of vehicle. After this, I will determine which alternative will be economical on a long-term basis. After getting this information, I will present it to my employer for implementation.
