Introduction

Philosophy of nursing helps in bringing out thoughts that people believe to be true about the nature of the nursing profession (Marchuk, 2014). This helps in providing a basis for activities of nursing. It can be said to endorse the ethical values that people hold as basic and bases of peoples’ beliefs in theories. Nursing philosophies are very important to help people associate with the various nursing theories that they believe can help them implement the nursing theories that they believe in. This paper will be one that will be one that helps me coming up with my own nursing philosophy. After coming with this nursing philosophy, I will relate it to one of the existing theories of nursing, which can best fit the philosophy that I have come up with.

My Nursing Philosophy

Various nursing philosophies have been created to explain some of the nursing theories that exists. For me there is one nursing philosophy that I have created to help guide me explain the various nursing theories. Nursing demands that the nurses show some level of love and care towards the patients. This is because most of the patients are stressed and undergoing the worst moments of their lives as nobody loves getting sick. It is therefore, necessary that some of form of hope and happiness is given to such sick people. This is why I have come up with this philosophy that people should treat others with respect and compassion.

I came up with this philosophy to help in taking of those patients who have go through a lot of pain during the tie they have been sick. There is certain level of sickness that just show of compassion and respect will do much for the patient that just giving medication among other services that nurses are supposed to do. It is there important for nurses to understand that good services are all about doing such activities that are related to medication of the patient or other related activities. They should realize that caring of patients is more that, it should involve giving some comfort and compassion towards such people.

Nursing Theories that conforms to the Philosophy

There are various theories of nursing that have been developed by various theorists over the years. Taking into consideration the such theories a find Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort to be one that can most relate to my philosophy that requires that patients should be treated with compassion and respect (Elakkuvana, 2011). Kolcaba’s theory of comfort is one that was developed by Kolcaba to help analysis of the aspect of comfort in the various disciplines that exists such as nursing, psychology, medicine and education among others. This theory came from a point of knowledge that the above mention disciplines plus others tend to engage with people who have various problems are in desperate need of comfort.

In nursing, the theory explains that comfort is necessary for the recovery of patients. This theory has therefore, developed various help in assessment, evaluation and measurement of patient comforts. According to the Kolcaba, the theory is a holistic nursing art product. The theory further explains that if a specific comfort needs of a patient are adequately met, the patients in most cases experience relief, which is a form of comfort. The theory provides four contexts in which patient comfort can occur. They include environmental, physical, psych spiritual and sociocultural.

Kolcaba believes that nursing is more of a process that entails the assessment of the patients’ comfort needs. All that nurses do is to ensure that the comfort of a patient during the recovery time is maximum. The assessment of such comfort takes various forms. Some of the forms include evaluation whether the recovery process is taking the times that is can be said to be within the time frame or taking too long. This can be done through asking of the various patients whether they are comfortable during the recovery process.

Pros and cons of the Kolcaba’s theory of comfort

There are various advantages that this theory brings to the nursing profession and taking care of patients in general. One of the advantages that it brings with it is the aspect of creating the necessary conditions that are necessary for such a patient to have a quick recovery after undergoing treatment (Martin, 2016). It is argued that comfort that is provided after treatment is very helpful in ensuring that patients have quick recovery. Another benefit of the theory is that it ensures that patients are given the necessary hope to help them during the difficult times of treatment and recovery.

There are also various disadvantages that comes with this theory of comfort. One is that teaching the skills of comfort is very difficult. This is because comfort skills are skills that in most cases are acquired naturally and instilling them on people is not that easy. This means that not all the nurses will have the skills to comfort patients during the recovery period. Another weakness of the theory is the creation of environment that can give comfort to patients have proved to be very expensive. Most of the healthcare facilities that tend to have such facilities that provides required level of comfort are very few and very expensive. This means that the process of achieving such comfort will be expensive to make it very difficult for people who are not economically stable.
