Part 1: Identification of project (50 points- Green light = 50 points)

Who are you leading? (person or group,
NOT yourself)

The personal leadership instance I would like to discuss is the fundraiser I have at Columbia Chinese Christian Church (CCCCMO).

What is their problem?
(short background)

The youth members of Columbia Chinese Christian Church (CCCCMO) are having a fundraiser to purchase more microphones and music instruments for the church. The church has a shortage of the microphones and music instruments which make it hard to conduct the Sunday services. The fundraiser will happen in three weeks’ time after church service. The youth group has not yet decided what we shall do for the fundraiser and the roles that each person will have for the fundraiser. I believe that this will be the chance for me to demonstrate leadership. I can take leadership of the group and plan the fundraiser.

What change do you want to make happen? (end product)

The purpose of fundraiser activity is to raise awareness for the fundraiser, not just in the Church but in the entire community and other branches of the church to ensure that we get enough support to reach the target amount of money after this fundraiser activity on March 31, 2017.

What is the first step you can do to make that happen? (SMART Goal)

To ensure that we can raise about $2,000 which will be sufficient for the microphones and the musical instruments before the beginning of Sunday services on May 14, 2017, the first step is that I have created awareness for the fundraiser for Columbia Chinese Christian Church (CCCCMO) by use of social medias such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter on March 3, 2017. I will design posters of CCCCMO that invite people to the fundraiser and disseminate them over the social media outlets. Since many of the people are on social media, I will be able to reach a large crowd of people, not just in the church but in the larger community that I would have using other means. Also, I decide to hold a jam session where we shall invite some local Christian bands such as Region Of AWE, The Farnum Family, and Sheryl Clapton to perform on May 7, 2017. The attendees will be required to make a small donation at least $10 on attending the event.

What type(s) of power do you intend to use? List power type(s) and how you will use.

I intend to use legitimate power to undertake the project. Legitimate power is the power that is derived from one’s high ranking position. It is only relevant when one is in that position and when they are viewed by the others as the rightful holder of the position. The legitimate power also inspires loyalty among one’s followers. I intend to use this power to achieve my goals. I will contend for the leadership position for this project in the youth group. Once appointed, I will delegate duties to the other members and explain the goals I have for the fundraiser. Also, I will use my expert power in this undertaking. Expert power is the power that is derived from one’s ability to do something or knowledge of something (Hayes, 2001). I have ever been in a fundraiser committee before; thus I know how these activities should be organized. My expertise will inspire people to listen to my ideas and follow my directives. It will, therefore, be much easier to implement my ideas and to direct people on what to do. Using these two powers will allow me to plan the fundraiser effectively.

How does this align with your vision, mission, and/or values?

My mission is to engage in activities that benefit the society. The fundraiser will benefit the church and consequently the entire society. I also believe in giving back to the community. The fundraiser will be my way of giving back to the community, thus allowing me to accomplish my values.

Part 2: Execution of Project (50 points)

Did you complete your SMART goal? Did this produce the change you wanted? 10 points- yes or no.

SMART GOAL

S-Specific

M-Measurable

A-Attainable

R-Relevant

T-Time oriented

Yes, I completed my SMART goal.

The goal is specific in that it focusses on raising funds for purchase of more microphones and music instruments for the Columbia Chinese Christian Church.

The goal is measurable in that we aim at raising approximately $2,000 for purchase of the microphones and musical instruments. As a result, the project’s success will be measured based on its achievement with regard to raising the needed funds for purchase of the instruments.

The goal is attainable since, owing to the number of members of the church, it would be easier to raise the $2,000 fund considering that majority of the members of the church are expected to participate in the fundraiser.

The goal is also realistic since the proposed amount and the time period allocated for planning and sensitization prior to organizing the fundraiser is reasonable.

The goal is also time-based in that it is scheduled to happen in three weeks’ time after church service.

Value of SMART goal- 15 points. How does your SMART goal provide evidence of your effort? Why should your SMART goal be in your circle of influence?

The SMART goal provides substantial evidence of my effort in that it provides an analysis of the realistic and objective nature of the project. It provides an assurance that, with all the measures put in place, the project is achievable and worth pursuing.

Documentation of project (insert picture, article, post from someone else, etc.)

25 points- clearly documents leadership happened
