Flattening Globalization

The book The World is flat by Thomas Friedman talks about the world being a flat place because of the various flatteners in the world. These flatteners have a huge impact on globalization, this not only effects the world economy in a significant way but it also has a tremendous impact on individual growth and development. According to me, out of the ten flatteners that he talks about in his book, Outsourcing and Offshoring play a huge role in affecting thousands of companies around the world as they split their service and manufacturing sector move to be more efficient in what they actually specialize in. A lot of companies also move their business services and processes to a new country or region in order to benefit from the lower costs of that particular area. These factors help businesses move their primary and secondary businesses processes to places that will do a better job in a cost efficient manner.

Talking about the first flattener, outsourcing can be defined as the process in which a person or a company undertakes tasks like providing services or manufacturing for another entity at lower costs and in a more efficient manner. Outsourcing has not only made possible the management to focus on their core functions and services but it has also helped in improving productivity. Companies often partake in outsourcing their business processes outside the country and this leads to growth in employment in the region where the jobs are outsourced to. Countries like India, Brazil, and China are hot destinations for such activities and even Thomas Friedman talks about how places like India and other Asian countries have impacted the world economy on a global level. Also, the development of the World Wide Web has helped to spread the concept of outsourcing because with the help of the internet delegating work to people living in other countries became much easier. All of this helped the businesses to earn huge profits as they were able to cut various costs and expenses by taking advantage of such opportunities.

Although outsourcing has helped the present globalization era greatly, it also creates a huge deficit of employment opportunities in the country from outsourcing is taking place. A very good example to explain this is how the current president-elect Mr. Donald Trump has changed the H1-B visa policies which allow companies to hire immigrant workers from other countries. This imminent policy change is going to affect the outsourcing opportunities for companies as they would be forced to hire local workers instead of assigning them to cheaper workers in other countries. This policy by the US government will hugely impact the IT sector and the Silicon Valley which rely on such outsourcing activities to run their businesses at a lower cost.

Offshoring was the other flattener that Thomas Friedman talked about in his book and offshoring can be defined as moving a business process to another country where you can take advantages of their labor and cheap costs. Offshoring is very similar to outsourcing but it deals with moving the whole business department to a new place including some of the main employees in numerous cases. Offshoring has led to the integration of cultures, social values, and different world economies. When a company indulges in offshoring practices they take their business values to different places and incorporate their way of operating with the trends of the country the company offshore their work to. By indulging in such activities companies give rise to globalization by removing the geographical boundaries between nations.

Countries with comparatively lower labor costs like China and India dominate the offshoring market because these nations have relatively lower costs and on a global level this creates competition amongst developing countries to gain the offshoring businesses. After China became a part of the World Trade Organization it became a key destination for offshoring. The IT and software companies have numerous divisions in countries like China and India because of the talent that they can acquire at lower costs. As the practices for offshoring by companies increase, the governments around the world are adopting friendlier offshoring policies so that there can be further economic and technological development around the globe.

The rise of the internet has eased the path for globalization and major organizations who indulge in practices of outsourcing and offshoring are working constantly on developing superior technological systems that will help them streamline their operations in a different country or region in a more proficient manner. By streamlining their activities and their operations, companies are also able to generate greater profits because they act in a well-organized manner.
