PREPARING A SNACK

Introduction

The snack I picked to write about is a smoothie. The choice of a smoothie has been driven by its nutritional value and that it can be taken any time of the day, either for breakfast, when hot or even at night (Halpern, 2016). The steps for coming up with a good smoothie include;

  • The first step is to freeze well cleaned fruits before use. This is important to have a chilled effect of the smoothie after its prepared and it also helps the fruits to preserve their natural flavor and nutritional value

  • To start your smoothie preparation process, put 2 mugs of milk (I prefer milk) to the blender. You can also use yoghurt or water from a coconut

  • Put your chosen fruits in three quarter of the mug. The fruits are the ones that bring the necessary flavor or preference. However, bananas are great as they bring great thickness to the mixture. This can be mixed with fruits such as peaches, mangoes or even water melons.

  • In this step, honey is added or a syrup such as a maple syrup. In case the fruits had not been chilled at the start of the process, ice can be added at this step to bring the chilled impact to the smoothie. It also makes the smoothie frosty.

  • To add more nutrients to the smoothie, vegetables such as spinach, which is the most commonly used, can be added. Other vegetables include; carrots, kiwi and also kale. Just anything vegetable that brings the required nutrients in the body can be added in this step.

  • Peanut butter can be added to add proteins to the mixture. Another protein alternative would be protein powder

  • In this step, the preferred flavors are added which may include cocoa powder for the chocolate taste, cinnamon or vanilla taste, according to preferences

  • The final step is to stir thoroughly until one achieves the texture that they need then blend the entire mixture

In coming up with a step by step method of coming up with a snack, I selected to prepare a smoothie as it is nutritious and can be made to be a balanced diet that is easy to prepare and interesting for young children. Children are used to the obvious snacks such as biscuits and cakes and so I wanted to select a different option that is nutritious and balanced in terms of nutrients’ composition.

The main rationale for choosing a smoothie as the snack of choice revolves around the following factors:

  • It is easy to prepare

  • It is nutritious and can be made to be balanced diet

  • It can be made to suit one’s taste through having a mix of the desired fruits and flavor

  • It is enjoyable especially when served chilled and can be served at any time of the day

  • Its ingredients are easily available as preparing it does not require complicated ingredients

  • Smoothies are good for kids especially for those that crave for candy and other sugary snacks that are unhealthy. This need can be satisfied through consumption of healthy smoothies that have been flavored according to one’s tastes and preferences
