The role of social workers in the criminal justice system.

Argument.

Do we need social workers especially in the criminal justice system? Some people would argue that those who have committed crimes or are accused of crimes do not need social workers. However, it is crucial for involvement of social workers in the criminal justice system. I am taking a major in criminal justice of human services. In my major, we are informed of the various job opportunities and one of them is working in the criminal justice system. As taught in this major, the demography of clients in this line of work is different since it includes prisoners, juvenile offenders and victims of abuse. The role of the social worker or rather human services worker in this setting is to prevent further crimes by the offenders and support them in the correct path of behavior (Homeland Security)

Key points.

The key points that support this argument are; the police cannot identify the need for psychotherapeutic counseling and therefore a professional human services worker is required to do so, people with criminal records require help to re-enter the society by overcoming stigma of their criminal record, they also help family members to overcome the effects of offender actions. These rationales show that as much as criminals have done wrong and have been convicted, they need help to prevent them from repeating their offenses once they are back in the society.

Audience

The audience for this essay would mostly consist of students and professor who are not majoring in criminal justice of social workers. As a result, they would not see the importance of social workers in the criminal justice system since they do not understand what this major entails. Another challenge would be the stereotypes of people towards criminals and social workers. People believe that criminals do not need help and that social workers only work with the poor, children and people with disabilities. Helping people reason beyond these stereotypes would be a challenge.

Goal.

Establishing the importance of social workers in the criminal justice system using the essay is a goal that is achievable.
