PERSUASIVE SPEECH ASSIGNMENT The Persuasive Speech requires you to not only inform us on a particular subject , but also persuade us. Your goal is to use persuasive strategies to change our beliefs, opinions, attitudes or motivate us to actually “do” som ething. Your speech should evoke passive or active agreement with your audience and will require you to:  Conduct research on a topic & providing supporting evidence  Explain 2 -3 Main Points clearly using a specific organizational pattern  Creat e a MLA “work s cited” page  Us e “Connectives” so your audience can follow along  Us e an audience centered approach to teaching.  Establish credibility with specific sources Topic Selection You should pick something that your audience will be interested in. Find creativ e ways to relate that topic to the audience. Explain why this topic is important to us and why we would care about it. What is the value to us? What do you want us to believe or do? Why should we agree with you or think like you? Also, pick something you actually care about. The more passionate you feel about the topic —the better you will speak about it! Introduction & Conclusion Remember, a strong introduction is a MUST. It helps “set up” the speech and grabs our attention. Make sure you establish c ommon ground with the audience, state your credibility, preview your main points and state your thesis. Your conclusion should be as dramatic and memorable as the beginning of your speech. Don’t forget to “Signal” the end of the speech, review your main po ints, and finish with a strong, memorable closing. Remember the things you need to do to start and end your speech. Order of Main Points In order for your speech to be effective, the audience needs to follow along and understand your Main Points. You n eed to pick an organizational pattern and organize your outline accordingly. (Problem -Solution; Problem - Cause -Solution; Comparative Advantages; Monroe’s Motivated Sequence) Follow this pattern to explain your points throughout the speech. Remember, to use transitions and connective throughout speech so that we can follow along and easily remember your main ideas. Overall Effective Delivery o This speech is about delivering information fluently, expressively and with conviction. You must believe your inform ation in order for the audience to “buy into it.” o All components of delivery (nonverbal & verbal) will be taken into consideration. o Speak extemporaneously, naturally and conversationally. Prepare your outline so that it contains the IDEAS you want to remem ber, not the exact wording you will use. No full sentences! Do not read! Visual Aids You must have a visual aid for this speech and it must be Power Point . You may also have additional visuals such as poster, handouts, overhead transparencies, photos, or object s. Your visual should be incorporated into your speech naturally and should be used to clarify or enhance the information you have told us. Integrate them into the speech as part of audience’s learning process to visually reinforce the ideas being learned. Make sure they are BIG enough for everyone to see! Practice with your visual to become familiar with using power point slides during a presentation. Points will be deducted if your speech is delayed due to your lack of knowledge or skill. Methods of Pe rsuasion/Use of Language The purpose of this speech to persuade the audience, which can be quite challenging. In order to persuade a group of people, there are some tips to remember: ○ Build credibility ○ Appeal to emotions ○ Use language and imagery effectively ○ Develop vivid examples A key component of persuasive speaking is creating imagery. That means using language that creates images or pictures for the audience. Remember to choose concrete words to create specific images for us. Also, using various methods of imagery will make your speech more interesting and get the audience invo lved. (Metaphors, similes, alliteration, repetition, antithesis, parallelism, personification) Remember to avoid fallacious reasoning and appeal to your audience with pathos, logos and ethos. Sources and Evidence Anytime you want to persuade an audience , evidence is a must. In order for us to believe your claim, we need to know you have found supporting materials to back up your points. This shows that your speech is not just opinion oriented, but that you have done adequate research to support your cla ims. You must conduct research to find materials that will bring your ideas across clearly and creatively and help support your claim. Your supporting materials must be from accurate, relevant and credible sources. Evidence should also be current, specifi c, up -to- date and from various types of sources (Testimony, Statistics, Examples, Quotations, etc…) o In addition, you must ORALLY cite at least 3 sources throughout speech. Tell us specifically WHO said WHAT, WHEN they said it, and WHERE you found the i nformation. If you don’t —it is plagiarism!!! Sincerity & Conviction to Persuade us If you are trying to persuade, then you must believe your own ideas. This speech requires you to “sell” your ideas to us. You need to some energy, enthusiasm and convictio n. If you appear bored or reluctant, your audience will be also. Be creative and get excited about your topic. Remember, you are persuading us…you want us to do something or believe something ; you want to change our minds and attitudes…that requires hard w ork and sincerity. Believe your own ideas a nd we will too! Adherence to Time Limit Much of our li fe involves trying to persuade others to believe our ideas or point of view. Many times we want to motivate people to take action. Usually we will have more than 5 -7 minutes to do so. However, this speech requires you to be concise and still communicate clearly and effectively. You need to clearly state your claim and use good organization with evidence to persuade to do something or believe something. Th is requires you to pick out the most important points and support them in a clear, concise & persuasive manner. Materials Handed into me! Like your last speech, you must hand in a SPEAKING outline and works cited page on the day you present . Your works c ited page should be in MLA or APA format and you should have at least 5 sources.
