Purpose

  • The student’s writing is focused upon meeting the purpose of the assignment and following the directions of the instructor (e.g. summary, critique, argument, narrative, description, review, analysis, etc.).

  • The student has articulated an effective goal of the essay/task. (i.e., hypothesis, thesis, statement of purpose).

  • The student stays on topic throughout the essay/paper.

  • The student demonstrates critical thinking skills.

Organization

  • When appropriate, the student creates an introduction that establishes context and background while also establishing purpose.

  • The student organizes the assignment seamlessly to reflect purpose of the assignment.

  • The student uses organization that is logical.

  • The student uses paragraphs that are fully developed, focused, and well-positioned.

  • The student uses effective phrasing to connect ideas.

  • When appropriate, the student develops a conclusion beyond re-statement of the thesis statement. It is evident that there is a deeper understanding, a wrap up of purpose, and an extension of possible future avenues to explore. (A SWOT from the organization compared to a SWOT from your research is an excellent way to conclude your research.)

Grammar/Mechanics

  • The student proofreads for grammar, mechanics, spelling, and word usage.

  • The student demonstrates audience awareness through the use of appropriate tone and language.

  • When appropriate, the student uses the appropriate method of citing sources, and writing style (i.e. APA).
