In my research, I have learned that many students who take basic courses have difficulty passin g to college-level classes and often have to repeat those classes several times before succeeding. This issue is quite complicated as it includes many variables, such as socio -economic status, scope of high school education, f irst language spoken, language acquisition, race and/or ethnicity, literacy in the home, educational level of parent(s), and more. I propose that a class be developed involving multicultural readings integrated with writing s that will help students gain the skills needed for them to move out of basic classes and into college -level classes. Like the oppressed of whom he writes, basic writers often believe they are incapable of learning after internalizing negative comments by previous teachers. By applying Freire’s methods to my research, students may be empowered to change their own circumstances as well as societal ills.
