Being a secular gift in a Muslim majority contest

Islam is a religion that has been designed under various strict cultural norms in order for the followers to live according to you the religion policies. Over the ti9me, Islam religion has evolved greatly, spreading globally over a short period. Through this evolution process, there are various characteristics that have been viewed emerging from Islam religion. According to the articles, "Dare to Disappoint and Persepolis" the two girls Marji and Samanci lived under Islam cultural environment although they were secular in Muslim countries. Through reading both of these articles, there is a certain characteristic portrayed by both writers based on the Islamic women and what is expected of them. Marji and Samanci are two ladies who have greatly demonstrated great humor of their own life towards their desired future. Both of these women have their own perception on who they want to be in their life despite many challenges that they were facing.

According to the writers of these two articles, "Dare to Disappoint and Persepolis" there are various ways that Muslim ladies are required to live according to their cultural values and norms. Grounded on Marji childhood experience, the living condition since she was a child in Iran, the writer has demonstrated on how school girls were required to live and what was required to be clothed in regardless of the religion especially when she was forced to wear the veil which was against her instinct. Nevertheless, Samanci was also subjected to the Muslim tradition that ladies without proper education cannot acquire any position in the community and they can only be soldiers. Although these two ladies faced these varieties of challenges in their childhood under Muslim countries, they never loosed their passion of who they wanted to be from their childhood.

Based on the articles, the Muslim characters have been demonstrated in various ways. First, women are individuals in Muslim who are obligated to live under certain regulation in the community. This aspect is demonstrated through school learning, where Marji's school boys were completely separated from girls while in Samanci School, girls without the proper education to earn degrees were regarded as useless in the community.

Faulty and collective memory

Both authors of Persepolis and Dare to Disappoint use a type of writing known as the graphic memoir. This is described as a story narrated from the memory of a person. Both authors are artists and authors of their narratives which they do by balancing the words and images to present a visually driven tale of their tales. They narrate the coming of age tales of young women growing up in periods of political and cultural modification in countries in the Middle East. Both center on images in every episode of their tales. She's the artist and the author of the tale, evaluating the words and imagery to present a visually-driven story of her childhood.

As for the author of Dare to Disappoint, she uses her own memory to write the narrative while for Persepolis, she is narrated to what was happening in the past then she can write it herself. Dare to Disappoint entails memoir of growing up in the 1980s in Turkey which brings up a contrast with the experience of living in America. It contains various relevant elements for people who are not from Turkey readers. This novel narrates Samanci's life when she was a child till her teenage years. The story narrates how Turkish militia coup that took place in 1982 affected Samancis' family, friend, and neighbors and went ahead to intensify the conflict between secularism and fundamentalists in Turkey.

Persepolis depended on other people's memory although from the author of Dare to Disappoint was writing what she experienced and saw during her lifetime as she grew up. This is the only difference with these two authors.

Marjis is the author of Persepolis who writes using childhood point of view. She learns the happenings that took place in her country through asking questions which assisted her in getting enlightened of the events that happened in her country Iran as she was a little girl. It has valuable sight into growing up in a culture that struggles between an extensive cultural past and westernization. There are also competing directions for women growing up in such an environment.

According to Persepolis novel, history is written in a different way than the way events take place because her story line was often got from his family members and friend because she was too little to understand what was going on. At times, Marjane could hear a statement from people and ask her family members especially her father what it meant and it would turn out to be a story of the past concerning events that took place in Iran.

According to Persepolis and Dare to Disappoint, they make use of the graphic to narrate their novels. Their choice of the graphic novels format allows both authors to make use images as well as text to convey the events of their lives living and struggles. This means that use of such images was a way of communicating past events although the images used were never used in the historical event. The aim of the images was to express their emotions and various events because the aim of the novel was to express their emotions in relation to their childhood views.

Alternative histories

Dare to Disappoint; Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir do challenge traditional history. All the three novels have their past histories narrated by the authors. This means that the authors were never there during such events and therefore they had to be narrated to them by friends and family members. These events were political in natures while others were associated with the culture of the people. It's true that history can be negotiated by including own imaginations to the events that took place. For example, In the Persepolis novel, the author could have included some imaginations to those events that took place in Iran in order to add humor to the novel but instead she wrote the events as narrated to her. Renegotiation of histories, therefore, leads to the development of comic plays because they intend to make people laugh and feel the humor in the story. This means that if these three novels had their histories renegotiated, then they would lose their genre and become comic in nature.

In the present would, the youth are responsible for consuming comics since they seem to have more market than any other genre. This has led people especially authors to be creative in this genre of the comic so that they can attract more readers hence make more income from this. Various historical events such as cold war and World War I and II have been negotiated made become comic in nature in order to draw the attention of the youths who are the main audience of this genre.
