The purpose of this assignment is to (learning outcomes or aims):
| |||
Vocationally Relevant Scenario: Mechatronics is the study of the design of systems that cross the boundaries between the disciplines of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Control Engineering and (often but not always) Microprocessor Systems. Importantly, mechatronic systems are not merely systems that happen to contain elements from more than one discipline (an electric motor does that) but are systems where the whole design has been approached in an integrated way. Mechatronic systems abound in industry and in consumer products. This assignment asks you to identify mechatronic systems from the real world and to comment on the discipline integration involved. As such it’s not based on a pre-determined scenario. You will also note that this assignment does not provide the opportunity to cover Merit or Distinction criteria. That’s because this particular part of the module is largely introductory and doesn’t lend itself to extension tasks. Don’t be concerned, there will be plenty of opportunities in the later assignments to cover these criteria and gain a Merit or Distinction for the module. This assignment has an upper word count limit of 1500 words. | |||

This brief covers: | Supporting Information (what you need to do) |
Task 1: AC1.1 identify mechatronic systems by their discipline integration | In the case of each of the product examples below, explain which of these is inherently a mechatronic system (in that its design could not realistically be undertaken except by an interdisciplinary approach), which could be designed by other means but might benefit from a mechatronic approach and which (if any) are inherently unsuited to this approach.
In your discussion, consider size constraints, cost of components, reduction in computing power, reduction in process delays and system compatibility. You should consider only the overall design of the product rather than the design of small elements within it. |
Task 2: AC1.2 explain the need for system development in an integrated way | By reference to at least one example, explain the difference between combining separately developed mechanical, electrical / electronic and control systems to produce an overall system and developing the system in an interdisciplinary way from the outset. You might choose from such systems as • Industrial robots • CNC machinery • Fly by wire aircraft • Suspension control on vehicles • Brake and steer by wire on vehicles • Domestic appliances • Auto focus cameras • Vending machines or select one or more of your own choosing. As part of your discussion, explain why an interdisciplinary approach is necessary for some engineering systems and the advantages such an approach gives over separate development. |
Task 3: AC1.3 investigate mechatronic applications in consumer products and industrial processes | Identify two consumer products or industrial processes that are mechatronic in nature. In each case:
