First draft and peer review: 30 points Final Draft: 75 points First Draft due: July 8 /9 Second Draft due: July 15/16 Word count: 350- 550 words (1 .5-2 .5 pages ) Write about what you love … or hate …food, music, movies …  Our second essay for the English 28 course involves you writing about your own exper ience! Specifically, you are asked to articulate your own – educated, sophisticated, well thought -out – personal reflection on a restaurant, a full music album, a film, or a p odcast that interests you. The tricky balance here is in writing about your experience – emotionally, sensory , intellectually – while also writing about how the thing (restaurant, movie, music) would be typically experienced by other consumers. And, t his is called a “ Review.” This essay is slightly longer than the previous one at 350-550 words . This means that the essay should be no shorter than 1.5 pages, but a stronger essay will be at least 2 pages. So, you are to write a review of either a film, a restaurant, or an entire album from a recording artist. As with any writing task asked of us in our college or professional lives, we have to know a background on the genre in which we are about to write in and see samples of that exact genre. Therefore, along with the examples o f film, restaurant, and album reviews included in the Etudes Module, I want you to also read the podcast and film review by students in the Everyone ’s an Author textbook. Plus, I would like for you to research on your own other examples of the kind of rev iew you are interested in writing. • For more on the “review ” writing genre, plead read chapter 15 of Everyone's an Author, pgs.

YOUR CHOICE! Just like the last essay, where you chose the advertisement you wished to write about, you have free reign, again, to choose your kind of review and what you would like to review. Students often write more effectively when they are involved and interested in the topic they are exploring. So … you can w rite about your experience with: any local restaurant, a fancy restaurant far from your home, a recent film you saw in the theaters or at home, a full -length album that you often listen to or a recent release that eith er thrills you or disappoints you, or a podcast of your interest. * REMEMBER: No Plagiarism will be accepte d! If you are tempted to copy and paste another review online, I will sniff that out easily and give you a 0 for this assignment. But, I know we have an honest, hardworking group of summer students who are here to improve and practice their own writing.  Schedule: As with our first essay, we will have an in -class peer review session of our first drafts where we can give each other i deas and helpful feedback. This will be held during Week 4 , before our Midterm exam . I know this does not give you much time to plan everything, but, if you haven ’t had time to go the restaurant yet, for example, at least write a ‘ proposal’ of what you are thinking about or plan to write about in your review. The final draft will be due during Week 5, July 15 -16.
