Workshop Plan

Title: Mental Health Workshop

Target Audience: New Correctional Officers

Length: 18 hours 2 week Course

Goal: Gaining knowledge and skills with the facility population of the mentally ill.

Learning Objectives:

  • Building a strong foundation to decrease the suicide rate of inmates.

  • Developing the proper skills to identify and support people with a mental illness.

  • Better understanding of correctional counseling.

  • Understanding the different programs and learning how to refer these inmates to the proper services.

  • The clinical perspective of a mental health illness.

Description: All new employees are required to complete this 18 hour workshop within two weeks of being hired. These employees will get a better understanding and will develop the proper skills to deal with the mentally ill inmates. From an inside perspective from the staff members who are certified such as counselors and psychiatrist. Understanding the different programs that are provided in this facility and making sure these inmates are connected to the proper help. Being able to identify symptoms of a mental illness and even being able to identify when a person is suicidal. Understanding every mental illness and the different stages and medications. Identifying and incorporate better behavioral, psychological and emotional responses to help these individuals reduce their involvement in criminal activity.
