Guide for “the letter in part A” Analysis

Introduction

  • Background  Give an overview (at least 2-3 sentences) of the issues surrounding the letter in part A

  • Introduce you and the letter. You should connect the problems you mentioned in the beginning to you (“In order to address these issues, I write the letter…”).

  • Present yours argument (use the word “argues”) and give a brief overview of the letter – some of your main points.

  • Conclude with your thesis. You will be analyzing the ethos, word choice, and structure, you should use the words “ethos,” “word choice,” and “structure” in this thesis sentence.

    • Example: In this essay, I will analyze the ethos, word choice, and structure of the letter.

Body Paragraph 1

  • Topic sentence. (Analyzing ethos)

  • Provide the ethos evidence (give a quote from the letter) and explain the significance of the quote when possible.

  • Analyze the strategy (or strategies) you use to present the evidence by addressing the what, how, and why.

    • What is the strategy? (ethos)

    • How is the strategy present? (Include a quote to show the strategy being used.)

    • Explain why that strategy is used. Again, avoid general statements like “He uses this strategy to persuade his audience” or “to make his argument stronger and more credible.” That’s the purpose of ALL strategies – but what is important about the specific strategy he identifies?

  • Tone and style are appropriate and rhetorically effective

  • Evidence (give a quote from the letter)

  • Explain

  • Results (effective to the boss/audience when read the letter…)

Body Paragraph 3

  • Topic sentence. (Analyzing structure) (Besides, I also analyze the structure of the promotion complain letter such that why I went in the order of paragraphs that I did in the letter, and why I do not mention the employee who, is related to the boss, gets the promotion.

  • Explain why you went in the order of paragraphs in the letter

  • Analyze why you do not mention the employee who, is related to the boss, gets the promotion.

  • Evidence (As the boss/audience can see in the letter, I never mention the employee in the letter…)

Offer a quick recap/summary of your body paragraphs. Finish with a statement on why all of this information is significant.
