Lab 1: Virtual Mechanical Properties of Materials in Tension
Directions: Using the VMSE site “Tensile Tests” module run tensile test for the following materials. From the stress vs. strain plot, fill out the data table and answer the questions.
Data table based on the VMSE plots & Appendix:
Sample | E (GPa) | σy (.002 offset) (MPa) | εy | σuts(MPa) | σf (MPa) | εf | *Text E (GPa) | *Text σy (MPa) |
temp. steel | 104.94 | 377.8 | 0.0036 | 16561 | 1628.4 | 0.1484
aluminum | 67.78 | 94.9 | 0.0014 | 483.94 | 474 | 0.2236
carbon steel | 129 | 241 | 0.0037 | 273.1 | 233 | 0.4302
cast iron | 183.3 | 158.4 | 0.0011 | 414.4 | 415.5 | 0.0044
HDPE | 391.4 | 1.2 | 0.0031 | 19.1 | 12.2 | 0.3367
nylon | 284.4 | 83.1 | 0.0455 | 87.5 | 4.4 | 0.4455 |
Questions:
Compare the materials in order from lowest to highest values obtained for: E, σy, σuts, and σf.
E: aluminum>HDPE>Nylon>temp.steel> cast iron >carbon steel
Qy: Temp steel > aluminum > carton >cast iron> HDPE
Quts: temp steel >aluminum >cast iron >carbon >steel >nylon>HDPE
Qf:temp steel >aluminioum >cast iron >HDPE> nylon.
Using Appendix H & Callister Text, how closely do your values for E & σy match the expected values? Which ones were different? Why might this be? *Report values as a range if possible
What is the optimal shape geometry for a tensile specimen? Why?
The high temperatures and large strain limits associated with superplastic materials amplify the possibility of the tensile test outcomes being sensitive to the shape and size of the specimen geometry.
What is necking and when does it occur?
It is a mode of tensile defoenmation where relatively large amounts of strain localize disproportionately in a small region of the material
Its always occurs after the ultimate has been reached.
Which material is most ductile? Which is most brittle? Justify your answer.
Aluminum is most ductile material became its have maximum E{ 4pa} rule which is 617.3 according to table.
Cast iron is the most ductile because cast- iron is a group of iron – carbon alloys with a carbon content greater them 2%
Assuming a poisson’s ratio of 0.3, what would the lateral strain for tempered steel at a stress of 1000 MPa?
Repeat the measurement of E and σy 10 times for tempered steel. What is the average and standard deviation?
***Extra Credit: Comment on the meaning of the average and standard deviation derived in (8)— what does this tell you about your results?
