Week 5: Discussion 1

Kelley Everett

For this week’s discussion, I am to complete equation # 26 on page 345,# 106 on page 346, and #38 on page 353 from our math E-book, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra.

I will begin by writing the formula for factoring trinomials from exercise # 26:

x2 +bx+c :

Equation:

x2 +3x+3 first 3 is the greatest common factor(GCF) and we must find 2 integers that equals 3 and is the sum of 3x(‘bx’ in formula)

2

1x3 neither of these coefficients is the sum of 3 when adding the numbers and thus cannot be factored into the equation. Therefore the equation is a prime polynomial.

Exercise # 106

This equation was difficult and I may require assistance upon completion. I am to factor the 4 term polynomial by grouping.

The equation:

ac+xc+aw2 +xw2 we have 4 terms and we first factor like terms

xw2 +aw2+ac+xc need to reverse the terms

x(w+a)2 +c(a+x) paired 1st and 2nd like terms

(xw+a)2 this is a perfect square result

Exercise #38

This method requires the AC method to solve the trinomial equation:

The equation:

15x2 -7x-2 First we must look at our coefficients: a=15

b= -7 and c= -2-multiple ac cofficients to obtain the product for ‘ac’ and sum of ‘-2)

15 x (-2) = -30 now we must find 2 integers from -30 that will equal -7

-10 x3=-30 -10+3=-7-so now we rewrite our polynomial

15x2 + -10x+ 3x -2 now we group our like terms in this 4 term polynomial

(3x + -2)5x +(3x-2)1 divide 5 into 15 and 10, then place results in parenthesis

Factor out the common common factors: 3x and1

(3x + -2)(5x+1) answer

Use Foil method to check answer=FIRST-OUTER-INNER-LAST

3x x 5x=15x2

3x x -1= 3x

2 x 5x=-10x

-2 x-1=-2

152 +-3x+ -10x + -2= 15x2 -7x-2

As mentioned above, I will require some guidance with problems solving if equations are incorrect. As normal, I work my problems out first without looking at other’s work. Thank you.
