Listen to the examples in my Ch. 3 assignment folder document "examples of meters.' 
Which meters are you familiar with? Which are new to you? Was it difficult to determine the meter or clap along with the beat? Can you hear the subdivisions of the beat? There is often a percussion instrument playing the subdivisions.
Listen to a variety of songs and pieces in your personal music collection and try to identify different rhythmic aspects in each of them. 
Determine the beat or meter of the musical examples below, determine the subdivision of the beat, and identify the presence of other properties of rhythm. Is syncopation present? Is acceleration or a change of tempo present?

The Bulgarian kopanitsa has duple and triple meter mixed to follow the footsteps ( 1 2 1 2 12 3 1 2 1 2 ) or fast-fast-slow-fast-fast or  11/8 time.  Many dances from the Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Greece, Turkey are not in simple duple or triple meters. Can you follow the beat?
