The Tao of Pooh Midterm

As I was reading “The Tao of Pooh” by Benjamin Hoff, the first part of the book “The How of Pooh”, is what inspired my drawing. In the first chapter, Hoff states that Taoism has adopted its ideas from Buddhism. He explains that in Buddhism, “Life on earth was bitter, filled with attachments and desires that led to suffering. The world was seen as a set of traps, a generator of illusions, a revolving wheel of pain for all creatures.” (3). In order to reach a state of Nirvana which is a state of no wind, Buddhists must transcend “the world of dust”. This is what inspired the bottom part of my drawing. For both Buddhists and Daoism, humankind must find a way to accommodate their suffering and accept it or reach Nirvana and Zen through meditation, time and patience. With Taoism, Hoff explains that the Tao “Dao” translates to “The Way”, and that this Dao has a vast amount of power with no limit and this power must never be questioned by the Human mind. In Daoism, the Dao is expected to help guide the way to transcendence and Nirvana. Transcendence in Taoism is to live in a harmonious way and being happy. Hoff explains in page three that K'ung Fu tzu “believed that the present was out of step with the past, and that the government of man on Earth was out of Harmony with the Way of Heaven.” Life is full of negativity. This negativity will not change. In order to be happy, one must accept this negativity and turn it into something positive. With Daoism, life is inevitable, one cannot question the Dao.

I applied all of these statements to my drawing. At the bottom of the drawing we see both Buddhism and Taoism being applied. The stages that Winnie goes through, Patience, Journey, and finally Nirvana, are also main concepts in both religions. The Journey that he follows though takes on the Daoist rituals. At the bottom drawing, we see Winnie and his attachment to honey and how it lead him to see that life without honey is not desirable, a trap and full of suffering. The Dao guides Winnie to Meditate and accept these traps as a way of life and that he should not expect to overcome this wind and tornado of pain in a short period of time. Winnie starts his meditating period in January 2013. The second part of my drawing is the middle part where Winnie starts to be more optimistic about the Dao’s teachings through his journey to the Way of Heaven. In this second stage he learns that in order to accept the hardships of life, he must step out of the past and into the present. He cannot harmonize with earth and reach peace if his soul is still trapped since Winnie only thinks that what happened in the past and what will happen in the future is what is important. In Daoism, the Tao will take care of business and all that Winnie has to do is allow his soul to experience the present life that it is in. The final stage of Winnie’s path to Nirvana and Heaven is in December 2020, where he is finally at peace and happy. He has accepted the teachings of the Dao and that life is not a trap of struggles, but a teacher of valuable lessons. Life is inevitable and should not be questioned because the Dao will guide Winnie’s life. In the meantime, all that Winnie has to do is remain patience and accept the present. He has finally found his honey and if he does run out again, hopefully he will not since on his journey is learned preservation, but if he does run out of honey, he will not see that as a negative thing, but as a positive thing because the Dao will be there to help him find more honey. Also if Winnie is good enough, the Dao might reward him by guiding him to honey that tastes better than the honey that he already has.
