Final Exam – Summer 2017

Name: INSERT YOUR NAME HERE

Directions:

Complete the following problems and place your answer/responses within the provided areas in this Microsoft Word document. When you have completed the exam, submit this file (be sure you have placed your name above and changed the file name as indicated) to the link within the “course documents / final exam” folder. You will have four (4) hours from the time you download the file until the time it is due. The exam is open-textbook (course books only) and open-note (other material posted on BB). If you use ANY outside sources, please be sure to cite them somehow (I will not grade formatting of citations, I just don’t want you to copy other work without giving proper credit).

Problem 2 (20 points):

During the course, we looked at a couple different ways to ensure our projects meet their quality/performance objectives. How would you recommend that we integrate Quality Concepts (including quality management/control) within a company’s scheduling, cost management, and risk management practices?

Problem 3 (20 points):

Review the Figure below and answer the following questions as if it was the end of week 5 for the project. Hint/Suggestion: I would recommend against using MS Project (or similar) because of the time limits. A spreadsheet should be enough to answer the questions below.

  1. What is the total planned value (PV in $) of the project at the end of week 5?

  2. What is the total earned value (EV in $) of the project at the end of week 5?

  3. What is the total actual cost (AC in $) of the project at the end of week 5?

  4. What is the total value of work remaining?

  5. What is the overall CPI for the project?

  6. What is the overall SPI for the project?

  7. What is estimated cost to complete the project (ETC)?

  8. What is the forecasted cost at completion (EAC)?

Problem 4 (20 points):

You are the project manager for developing a new retail cell phone for your technology company. As part of the primary goals for the project, you need to create a product that will have 24 hours of continuous data/voice usage before needing to be recharged. It has been determined that the best route to making this project a success is to OUTSOURCE the design and development of the new battery. What processes, procedures, or tools would you implement to make sure you maintain control of this outsourced work?

Problem 5 (15 points):

Your company is about to undertake a risky new project where there are significant penalties if the project finishes late. What scheduling technique(s) would you recommend to use during the planning phase to ensure the project has the highest probability of finishing on-time and why?

Problem 6 (5 points):

Reflect on the material covered in this course. What areas would you liked to have seen covered more? What areas would you like to have seen covered less? Are there areas that were not covered at all that you think should be included? Provide any other feedback that you think will improve this course (positive or negative comments are welcome). All who answer this question will receive full credit regardless of their response; however, please take this seriously as I value your input into making this class better. Thank you in advance for your comments and thoughts.
