Homework 1 (Ch. 4) Name:

Instructions:

  • Enter your name above.

  • Respond with your answers and reasoning/work for each question as shown below. For questions involving calculations, I need to see at least the equations (formulas using symbols shown in the textbook) you used, the values you entered, and the method of computation (calculator, Excel, etc.). Answers without reasoning (even if correct), will not receive points. Incorrect answers with clear reasoning will be partial credit.

  • You may type in your responses or insert an image (scanned, photographed, or screen captured) or spreadsheet into the appropriate space below; expanding that space as needed by your response.

  • If you use an Excel spreadsheet to generate your answer, copy and paste the essential parts (graphs, tables, etc.), properly labeled, into your document as an inserted picture. Do not attach the actual Excel file.

  • When completed, save your work as a Word or PDF document.

  • Go back on Blackboard to this homework item, then attach your file and upload it.

1: Using Excel, construct a Pareto diagram (similar to Figure 4-2 of textbook) showing both the frequency and percent cumulative of the types of defects found by a quality engineer over a one week period: too small = 60; too big = 20; too soft = 15; too hard = 90; too rough = 17; and other = 10. You will find some video tutorials on Blackboard I made that might be helpful in making these graphs and inserting them into your document. The videos are under the “Course Documents” button in the “Tutorials” folder.
