Cedar Point Announces 2018 Improvements Program,

Including Major Water Park Expansion

SANDUSKY, Ohio – Family is the focus at Cedar Point in 2017 as the amusement park/resort has announced plans to add several activities for guests of all ages. The centerpiece of the new roster of attractions will be a major expansion to Soak City’s water park, with a sit-down restaurant, spinning thrill ride and paddleboat ride capping off the improvements program.

Cedar Point’s Soak City addition will be a multimillion dollar investment with a 6.5-acre area that will splash into the water park, making this the largest expansion to Soak City since the complex originally opened in 1988. Center Point opens for the 2018 season on Saturday, May 10, and the Soak City water park opens Saturday, May 24.

The Soak City project is part of an ongoing commitment to the evolution of the resort side of Cedar Point. With 57 rides, including 12 roller coasters, Cedar Point already has more rides and roller coasters than anywhere else in the world.

Several new water attractions will make waves at Soak City in 2018, including Breakers Bay, a gigantic wave pool; Eerie Falls, an action slide area; Adventure Cove, an activity pool; an adult pool featuring a refreshment center in the water; and a miniature inner tube river for toddlers. Soak City is located on the Cedar Point Peninsula adjacent to the amusement park and is a separate fee facility.

“We are focusing on developing Cedar Point into a complete resort and vacation destination,” executive vice president and general manager of Cedar Point Don Miears said. “These additions to Soak City are a natural – they will make our water park a full-day experience in water activity and thrills, while adding to the resort atmosphere of Cedar Point.”

With the expansion of Soak City, Cedar Point will have brought its water park’s size to 18 acres – comparable to the big year-round water complexes in the warmer states of Florida, California and Texas.

The highlight of Soak City’s additions will be Breakers Bay, a 22,500-square-foot, 500,000-gallon wave pool that will generate three-foot-tall waves which guests can ride out on inner tubes or body surf. Eerie Falls will contain three twisting inner tube raft slides, while Adventure Cove will exhibit various interactive water elements for pre-teen to adult guests. The Soak City expansion will also feature an adult pool with a swim-up refreshment center and a miniature inner tube river for toddlers.

“Our guests will be able to spend a day or two on all the rides and roller coasters at Cedar Point, and then visit Soak City for another day on the water slides and in the pools,” Miears said. “It’s the perfect combination for a summer getaway.”

A volleyball court, additional eateries, merchandise shops, lockers, showers and a special area for catered group events will also be included in the Soak City expansion for 2018.

Center Point originally opened Soak City in 2000 with 10 water slides. In 2012, Tadpole Town, a children’s area; and Main Stream, an inner tube river; were added. In 2015, another expansion at Soak City highlighted Zoom Flume, a high-action group water thrill slide; Renegade River, an adventurous inner tube river; and Choo-Choo Lagoon, a children’s section packed full of liquid activities.

Also, new in 2018 will be Midway Market, a high-capacity sit-down restaurant located in the front of the park; Chaos, a spinning thrill ride that will whirl riders in three different directions and will be located near the Magnum XL-200 rollercoaster; and the Swan Boat paddleboats, which guests can paddle around a lagoon in the back of the park near Thunder Canyon and Snake River Falls.

“Our philosophy is to continually reinvest in our parks,” president and CEO of Cedar Fair, L.P. Richard Kinzel said, who owns and operates Cedar Point and three other amusement parks. “The Soak City expansion will help Cedar Point continue to grow as a major family resort destination.”
