Grading Guide: Assessing Arguments

ENG/200 Version 1

Understanding the elements of an argument is the first step toward creating your own. In this assignment, you will choose one of the three essays below. Each demonstrates a unique style of presenting an argument.

Review the following essays in Chapter 1 of Elements of Argument, and consider the one that draws your interest. (Be sure to add the textbook and the article separately to your references page.)

  • Page 15: Aristotelian: "I am Adam Lanza's Mother" by Liz Long

  • Page 22: Rogerian: "The 'Unnatural' Ashley Treatment Can Be Right for Profoundly Disabled Children" by Peter Singer

  • Page 31: Toulmin: "Latest 3-D Films Add Dimension, Not Appeal" by Jonathan Winchell

Select one of the three argument essays listed above to evaluate.

Use the argument style (Aristotelian, Rogerian, or Toulmin) from Chapter 1 to evaluate it. (Review the argument type in Chapter 1 in order to know how the argument was arranged.)

Use the strategies on pp. 53-54 in Ch. 2 of Elements of Argument for your evaluation.

Write an assessment of the essay in third person point of view. Your assessment must be a minimum of 350 words and no more than 1 page double-spaced. Include the following language and details in your assessment:

  1. First, identify the essay and the author.

  2. Identify the author's thesis.

  3. Identify the argument style used in the essay (Rogerian, Aristotelian, or Toulmin).

  4. Explain how the organization of the article was effective in making its argument.

  5. Implement one quote from the essay you selected to illustrate your evaluation.

  6. Identify the methods the author used to argue a point, persuade, mislead, or sway the reader.

  7. Explain the author's awareness of and response to other arguments were demonstrated in the essay.

  8. Identify the level of timeliness, relevance, credibility of the author and publication presented in the essay.

Format your summary according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Include an APA-formatted title page and essay formatting. Include APA Style in-text citations for any ideas used from the textbook or the individual article, as well as an APA Style references page. Use the Reference and Citation Generator in the Center for Writing Excellence for assistance with citations, if necessary.
