The Influence of Technology on human life

One of the major positive impacts of technology is the influence on communication which has greatly revolutionized the universe. Through information technology, we can easily communicate with our friends and relatives who live far from us (Schreyer, 2000). Earlier, we relied on messengers and letters to send information from one place to the other; however, with technological advancements, we have mobile phones and the internet that is accessible worldwide. Through network signals, we connected to people across the universe and can thus share information. Social networks also give us a platform to share ideas, meet friends from all over the world and trace our lost friends. This is just one example of the importance of technology, the next point ventures into another field that has been improved.

Technology has advanced the field of agriculture by allowing participation and making informed decisions. Most developed countries implement precision farming which uses IT to make a direct contribution. The farmer can easily access accurate and timely resources of information for valuable decision-making. Farmers in the undeveloped countries depend on conventional sources, which are slow, for making decisions. With IT, the farmer can also make better plans on his farm practice with the adequate knowledge of farming seasons (De Janvry & Sadoulet, 2002). Besides, the positive effects, technology is harmful; the following paragraphs present the negative impacts of technology.

The introduction of the internet has caused addiction especially among children and youths. Many children spent most of their time online playing games. Consequently, this practice has reduced their physical activities and exercises. Instead of spending time on doing their home-works or extra learning, most of the times they are glued to playing games; moreover, they have ceased to play games that involve physical exercises and pose a threat to their health. The internet also propagates pornography which is harmful which has caused addiction in both the young and old (Speers, 2012). The next paragraph also provides another negative side of technology.

IT encourages farmers to apply fertilizers which are gradually affecting soil fertility. With more available information on agricultural practices, farmers have been informed of numerous kinds of fertilizers they can apply to increase productivity in their farms. Unfortunately, the heavy usage of fertilizers deprives the soil of its natural fertility. This directly implies that in the near future, soils will not be able to support farming; poverty will cripple in as a result and make us start all over again. Moreover, through technology, farmers are increasingly making use of the greenhouse which has caused global warming; the ongoing increase of temperatures threatens the extinction of certain plant species. We can, therefore, conclude that technology is not only beneficial but also harmful in some aspects, hence, should be reviewed.
