Student Loans and the Stress Financially On Marriage

Finances are considered to be the leading cause of stress in a relationship. SunTrust Bank report shows that student debt is taking a specific hard toll on the marriages. Committing to someone with such kind of loans feels to be very unfair and it always holds back some marriages because for the couples starting their life of marriage, the burden is having an impact on their lifestyle and the capacity to purchase a home or having children is also tampered with (Kevin, 2013).

Thesis statement: Student loans are adding stress to young marriages, therefore, marrying into debt is acting as a test to the marriage, especially for the young college graduates. This is even becoming more stressful when such debts are higher than one partner.

Most of the student loan payment plans are usually based on the income and this income is being driven by the payment plan. And the size of the monthly payment is directly depending on the amount of income that is legally reported. Once a student gets into marriage before making a full payment of the student loan, the income of both partners might be applied to the payment plan and such changes lead to a huge jump in the amount of money being owed by both partners in that particular marriage (Kevin, 2013).

Majority of couples in their 20s and 30s do believe that they will be fine until such a time when they hit the brick was and understand and that they are not in a position of achieving of what they have dreamt to have. It has also become hard for these couples to access a mortgage. With such reduced choices or opportunities, the resentment is growing thus leading to the separation and divorces. College loans and other money factors are contributing to the higher cases of divorce. Money is considered to be one of the leading reasons why couples fight and break up.

Disagreements over the issues related to money and finances are some of the key contributory factors leading to divorce in the United States. There is a negative connection between student loan and marriage. According to the report released by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling Survey, 54 percent of individuals or couples are unwilling to take part in helping a spouse pay off large sums of debt (Aryea, 2015). Some individuals have the idea of getting into marriage but are not ready to pay off the debt while others prefer to delay marriage until such a time when their partners make full payment of the loans.

Conclusion

As a result of the rising cases or divorces and unwillingness of the partners to help others in paying loans, it is important to take a wise step to avoid such situations. One of the strategies which can be adopted by the couples includes moving away from the income-driven repayment plan. It is also important to protect the spouse during the worst case scenarios.
