I believe that addiction can easily stem from both genetics and the environment a child is raised in. There is a long line of addiction throughout my dad's side, but the addiction is different from person to person. The only consistent variable is the fact that 90% of my dad's family members, aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents, siblings, nephews, etc, are subconsciously reliant on something. This leads me to believe that genetics could absolutely play a role in addictive tendencies. On the other hand, I think growing up in a household watching an adult (or two) smoke, drink, etc. every night or all through the day could lead a child to grow up thinking it was normal and okay, and unintentionally become an addict.

Genetics does play a role in addiction but environment plays a bigger role. The people and place a person is around while growing up plays a bigger role. If the person surrounds themselves with drug use I believe then they are more likely to start using them as well. I do think if the parents were an addict the child may be more prone to being addict to a substance but could choose not to try the substance to become addicted but surrounding yourself with people who use might make them more inclined to use and become addicted.
