You will see many documentaries in this class (e.g., Age 7 In America & 14-UP & 21-UP in America; & How to Die in Oregon). You will write a reaction paper to ONE of these documentaries. A reaction paper is just what its name suggests—a paper explaining your reaction to the documentary that I have shown in class. It may be like a review, because your reaction may involve judgment or evaluation; it may be like an analysis, because your reaction may focus on a particular character, relationship, scene, or film technique. It is also like a journal entry, in that it presents a personal reaction rather than an attempt to provide either definitive judgments or detailed analysis. It differs from a journal entry, though, in that it is a more formal essay, prepared for an audience. Like any good essay, your reaction paper should develop a central idea or perception or thesis statement (i.e., depending on the type of reaction), support it with specific evidence (usually references to individual shots or scenes or class learning), and use clear language and a logical order. The general elements of the reaction paper, therefore, will contain: 1) an introduction that includes a short summary of the documentary/film; 2) a central idea or perception or thesis statement; 3) naming of a reaction style (e.g., review, analysis, or personal); 4) your reaction; and 5) a conclusion that discusses how this video contributes to your understanding of HBSEI concepts. Please consider the Reaction Paper Grading Rubric as a guide.
