I think that people will act and perform ethically based on what they know to be right (individual), what is socially acceptable (significant others) and what is legal(opportunity). People may choose poorly when they have a lack of knowledge or maturity about something (individual),  in the past, they have been rewarded for a particular behavior (opportunity),  or they may feel pressure from the need of money/fame/recognition/acceptance (individual).

You need to trust your gut. If it feels wrong, most likely it is wrong. Doing the right thing or acting ethically is sometimes as simple as just doing the right thing. St. Augustine said "Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it. Right is right, even if no one is doing it." I also believe that
