07.04 Pests and Pest Management - Pest Management Lab

Procedure
  1. Predict how many insect or other pest parts may be found in your household food supplies.
  2.  Use approximately one cup of each of the substances. Handle each one separately.
  3. Spread out the food on a newspaper or paper towel. Carefully observe and record any foreign objects (different colors will make them easy to find—they could be eggs, wings, legs, or unidentified items). Taking your time, spread the substance out in a very thin layer so that you can observe it in detail. You may use a magnifying glass if you wish. Record your data in a table format.
  4. Record the following information in your data table:
  • Was the food container open or closed when you began this experiment?
  • What substance is the food container made of (cardboard, plastic, etc.)?
  1. Design an experiment that tests the principles of integrated pest management to reduce pests in food using alternatives to chemical treatment. You do not have to carry out the experiment. Choose at least two of these ideas presented in step 6 for your proposal, or suggest your own ideas (obtain approval from your instructor). Design an experiment that could test the effectiveness of your two proposed control methods.
  2. Integrated pest management principles include the following: increase sanitation, use clean tools and containers, isolate food substances, monitor environment carefully, handpick pests, natural predators, monitor life cycles (know your pests), physically block pests, and seal cracks and crevices.
