Computer Applications in Education

  • Computers are widely used in the learning institutions, and the instructional software plays a prominent role in revolutionizing education. The instructional programs are classified into five categories: drills and practice, tutorials, simulations, instructional games, and problem-solving tools.
  • Selecting the most appropriate software is challenging because it is hard to classify and choose the most suitable for a particular task. The available software suffers the limitation of overlap of functions because it is difficult to find one program that solves specific problems. For instance, Reader Rabbit contains several programs, including drill activities, problem-solving, and games.
  • Some benefits of using instructional software in class are that they save time, offer immediate feedback, and improve interactions between the learner and the tutor. This teaching approach also helps in the demonstration of concepts, fosters cooperation, promotes teamwork. However, the use of computer programs has its drawbacks. For example, there is a possibility of misuse of such programs as simulations as well as drill and practice programs. Other programs, such as instructional games, may be inefficient, and students may lose focus when subjected to more fun than learning.
  • Another model applied in the classroom is the integrated learning system (ILS), which incorporates lessons into the standard curriculum. A well-designed ILS should have effective pedagogical strategies, support different report formats, and interpret reports easily. Although ILS offers personalized instructions and it is easier to access it online, the implementation of the systems is costly and there are concerns about its role in education.

Courseware evaluation is implemented to review the effectiveness of the instructional programs in the classroom.

The evaluation should begin with the identified needs, locate titles, complete hands-on reviews, and collect

students’ feedback. Some of the aspects determined are the effectiveness, accuracy, and user-friendliness of the

teaching.

  • Instructional software is designed to assist instruction. Different types of software are: Drill and practice, Tutorial, Simulation, Instructional games, and Problem solving.
  • Instructional software is difficult to select because they are hard to classify because include different activities. For example, Reader Rabbit have overlapping functions, such as drill activities, problem solving, and games.
  • When selecting a software there are some features that form part of the criteria of a well-designed program. They are control over presentation, appropriate feedback, answer reinforcement, interactive, appropriate pedagogy, adequate answer-judging and feedback, appropriate graphics, system fidelity and accuracy, appealing formats and activities, instructional value, good documentation to explain system characteristics and uses. These features depend on the type of instructional software using.
  • Integrated learning systems (ILS) are software designed to deliver instructional content. They are highly interactive and provide feedback as to progress and grasp of the subject matter at hand. They have instructional objectives and lessons integrated into standard curriculum. For ILS to be well designed, it needs to have a good coverage of the curriculum, good pedagogical strategies, several different report formats, and the reports should be easy to read and interpret.
  • Courseware evaluations are focused in some features, such as it teaches what is intended to, the content is accurate, current, and appropriate, is user friendly and works correctly.
