EASY ESSAY QUESTION

1. (100 points) Your have to choose a newspaper or magazine article and write a short essay about it. The article has to be related to a Chapter from the textbook determined by the last digit of your student number following this criteria: • If the last digit of your student number is between 3 and 9, then you have to work on that Chapter. Example: if your student number is 1234567 then choose Chapter 7 • If the last digit of your student number is between 0 and 2, then you have to work on Chapter 10, 11 or 12, respectively. Example: if your student number is 12345670 then choose Chapter 10. (Notice that nobody will work on Chapters 1 nor 2). The article can be of any credible newspaper or magazine. I recommend The Economist, The New York Times (in particular its “Upshot” section), Financial Times and Wall Street Journal. The essay should have four parts: 1. Part 1 - Article Summary: What is it about? Background information and context. Why did you choose the article? 2. Part 2 - Theoretical Analysis: How is it related to the Chapter? What equation/model can you use to understand the article? How does the theory help to understand the article? 3. Part 3 - Empirical Analysis: What data and method is the article using? Is there a hypothesis? What open questions does this leave for researchers? What policy implications does the article have? 4. Part 4 - Econometric Applications: First, watch the first three videos of this course: https://mru.org/masteringeconometrics-joshua-angrist. Then briefly explain how these econometric methods can be applied to the hypothesis question discussed in Part 3. Essay format: • It should be around two pages long, but no more than three pages long. Be sure to cover the four parts of the article analysis. • Your analysis should include at least one equation and graph related to your corresponding Chapter, and an explanation of the intuition behind these. • Add relevant graphs and tables from the article in the Appendix (the Appendix does not count for the three page limit). • Include your name and student number in the first page. Also include the source of the article you chose (title, date, newspaper, authors) and a link to the article in the first page. • Please upload a .pdf file to UM Learn by 9pm. Follow these guidelines carefully. The grade is based on the overall quality of your essay.
