Containerization and intermodalism are two areas of transportation that are related to each other but are completely different when you look at their core definitions.
Containerization is defined by the Merriam Webster's Dictionary as: a shipping method in which a large amount of material (such as merchandise) is packaged into large standardized containers.
Intermodalism is most commonly defined as a method of transporting goods via multiple modes of transportation such as rail, water and road. Merriam Webster has yet to glorify such an important part of the way that our economy functions with a mention in the dictionary.
Containerization and intermodalism go hand in hand as one could not exist without the other. The lynchpin of intermodal transportation is containerization. However, without intermodalism, containerization would probably not exist. The logic is very circular as containerization enables intermodalism and containerization would not exist without intermodalism.
For example, Walmart wants to import women's cotton dresses manufactured at a factory in China to their stores in the United States and Canada. The easiest way to transport those goods is to pack them into containers (containerization) and ship those containers to a water port via truck (intermodalism). That container is then loaded onto a ship headed to the Port of Long Beach, California. Once the goods arrive in Long Beach the containers that I first mentioned are then loaded onto a truck or railcar for transportation to a distribution center where the goods are then removed from the container and then distributed to the individual stores. However, some stores may require a full container of goods: those containers are then offloaded at the individual stores and the goods are often kept in the container until they are ready to be placed in the store (containerization). Walmart needs the containers to be able to ship their goods via intermodal methods.
One of the benefits of containerization is that containers can be used as temporary storage space by both the shippers and retailers/manufacturers. Since the implementation of containerization and intermodalism after World War II, the amount of labor required at ports has diminished and the amount of warehousing space required by shippers and those receiving the containers. For example, a retailer such as Walmart can utilize space in a parking lot for containers of goods sold in the store instead of taking up valuable stockroom space. If you look at the back parking lots of many Walmart stores during the holidays, you will often see containers of goods stored there. Containerization and intermodalism have also enabled the globalization of our economy by making it much easier to transport large quantities of goods from far flung sources around the world.
Containerization and intermodalism could not exist without each other. They are now a fundamental part of the way our globalized economy functions.

Intermodalism as defined by our text book is “the fully coordinated door-to-door efficient delivery of freight using two or more dissimilar modes of transport” (Konings, 35). Freight can be moved by many different modes. These modes are air, rail, trucking, sea, and even the pipeline is a form of transportation. So, to me Intermodalism is any combination of these modes of transportation used to move freight for its origin to its destination using different transportation systems. For example: truck and rail, truck to airplane, or even truck to airplane back to truck.
Containerization is the use of containers to store or transport products. Containerization helps make the transportation of cargo using different transportation modes a seamless process. Many exports that leave the United States through sea ports use containerization. This helps ensure the mass transportation of cargo from one location to another. In the military and where I work now we use containers when shipping overseas this helps ensure the safe transportation of out cargo from one location to another. The main difference is that when I was in the military we also used containerization to store all our gear and supplies as well. This is since we lacked the adequate warehouse space.
Also, containerization and Intermodalism go hand in hand, containerization has helped make the use of different intermodal transport systems more efficient by helping cut down on the time it takes to move a large amount of cargo and the overall cost.
