Kilauea is the most active volcano in Hawaii. It has been in a constant state of eruption since January 3, 1983. While these eruptions are a boon to the tourism industry on the Big Island, the lava flows pose a hazard to property and the gas emissions from the volcano pose a health hazard to the residents. Sulfur dioxide emissions can combine with water and form sulfuric acid, creating acid rain and can damage lung tissues. The workbook for this exercise presents periodic measurements made at the summit of Kilauea and converted to sulfur dioxide emissions in metric tons per day (a metric ton is 1,000 kilograms or about 2,205 pounds). Your instructor will assign you a years worth of data (found in the SO2 Data worksheet) to use to do the following tasks.

1. Cut and paste your assigned data into the indicated place in the "Cut and Paste Data" worksheet.

Qualitative Data

The answer workbook for this exercise also contains two worksheets of data for tuberculosis incidence in the United States from 1993-2014. Your instructor will assign you a year to work with for this data. Use your assigned data to do the following tasks.

1. One worksheet called "TB Race_Ethnicity Total" breaks down the data into number of new cases by ethnicity or race. Use the total to figure the relative frequency of cases in each ethnicity/race. If data is not available (NA) for a category, remove it from consideration. Use this data to make a pie chart in the worksheet entitled "Pie Chart".
2. Another worksheet called "TB Race_Ethnicity Rate" breaks down the TB data into rate per 100,000 population for each ethnicity/race, providing a picture of the numbers of cases for a group compared to its abundance in the population. Use this data to create a bar graph in the worksheet entitled "Bar . Note that you cannot use this data to make a pie chart because it does not add up to 100%.
