Format for a Literary Analysis

• Introduction. The introduction can give background information either about literary analyses itself, the elements of literature you choose to analyze, or the piece of literature you choose to analyze. The last or second to last sentence must be the thesis. The thesis of an essay is the main idea of the essay plus your attitude towards it.
• Body paragraph 1. If you did not give a summary of the story, you want to do before you begin analyzing the literature. Be sure to include the topic sentence which should be the first sentence of the paragraph.
• Body paragraphs 2-8. These paragraphs must be the analysis itself. Remember that an analysis is not a summary. A summary is what happened; an analysis is why or how did these events happen. Use quotes sparingly to support your claims. Be sure to include the topic sentence which should be the first sentence of the paragraph.
• Conclusion. The conclusion may be 1-2 paragraphs. It all depends on how much detail and critique you have given to the essay. The conclusion of the literary analysis restates your thesis and sums up why your essay is important. What knowledge gave you given the reader? No new information can be included in the conclusion.
