Assignment Instructions

This written assignment is comprised of addressing two specific topics related to homeland security. For each topic, the student is expected to develop a 3 page essay that provides the following information:  

Topic 1: What are the capabilities and limitations of intelligence in supporting homeland security efforts?   

This essay (three pages) should provide an examination of the important role that intelligence plays related to homeland security, the various elements that comprise the intelligence community, how they are carried out on both the domestic and international front, as well as those issues that support these efforts and serve as as impediments in carrying out their responsibilities.

Topic 2:   Critique the current capability of the homeland security enterprise to adequately identify and adequately address future challenges.   

Throughout this study, the concepts of homeland security and homeland defense, as well as their associated missions and resources have been our focus. This particular essay (three pages) is to offer your position as to the competency of the overall homeland security enterprise to identify and respond to future areas of risk in a proactive and effective manner. Your position should be fully supported by approriate details and examples regading this overall capability. 

Scoring Rubric: 

A copy of the complete scoring rubric for this assignment is attached. The following is a synopsis of that rubric.  

Technical Requirements:

Length:  3 pages per topic (not including required single title page and reference list), double spaced, 1" margins, 12 pitch type in Times New Roman font. Attach as an overarching single document with one title page and one reference list; where body of report provides requested information regarding the two focused topics.  

Sources: A minimum of 3 academically acceptable sources (per topic) are to be utilized. Sources for this assignment are to come from both assigned readings and that obtained from conducting own research. You are not limited to the pages assigned from each document, but are limited to those documents only to defend and support your arguments/claims.  

Citations/References:  You must use APA  (Parenthetical in-text ) citations and reference list style for this assignment -- no endnotes or footnotes  

Submission: All work is to be submitted as an attachment to the assignment link by midnight on Sunday, the last day of class. All work should be prepared in Microsoft Word format.
