CHEN. 3170 - Applied Engineering Problem Solving*Assignment # 6[. Maase , Spring 2019Task # 2 - Population Balances : " Revolution , Evolution , and other Events"Background ( This is an email sent to you )Hey -Hope your work is going better than mine ! Actually , I need a favor that is going to add toyour workload a little bit - I ran into a problem for which I'd like your help ( as well asany advice you might be able to provide ) .Anyway , this is where it all started , with this email -DY. E -We've currently involved in a research study of biodiversity conservation in Madagascar .As you know , Madagascar has one of the richest biodiversityes of flora and fauna in theworld ; however in recent years , the rate of deforestation has increased dramaticallyresulting in high biodiversity loss and species extinction . Our project focuses onindigenous fruit and nut trees . While we are used to a certain amount of loss of crop due*to animal populations we are experiencing a larger than usual problem with lemurs .The country has gone through an epidemic outbreak of rabies with the introduction ofdomestic dogs and wild cars . This outbreak has caused a serious decrease in the lemur'snatural predator , the fossa. The outbreak is now under control , but until the fossapopulation recovers , the lemur population is out of balance .In any event , we now intend to capture and remove lemurs , possibly selling theseanimals for research purposes to recoup some of the expenses of our work , and wouldlike to know what to expect . e.g. how many lemur's should we capture each week / month ?Should we preferentially capture males or females ? We would like any information ,some sense at least , of what happens in the lemur population - hopefully we can make animpact .That is the basic outline of the problem . I'd like eventually to contract with you to writea more comprehensive program to maximize our population control , but for now take alook at the problem do some basic calculations and let me know what you think , thanks !Regards ,Dr. Julian KingI made preliminary investigations into the mathematics involved in population balances*which , although surprisingly simple , often show rather complex behavior .
