  • 1. Choose a piece of music that you like, of any style or length.  It should have a 'named' composer / songwriter.    (Namely, you cannot choose for example 'music from the internet' that doesn't have a named composer/ songwriter. 2. The music can be of any style - for example jazz, popular music, hip hop/ rap, classical, country music, folk music - any style from around the world.-3. The music can be of any culture or country around the world - e.g. U.S., India, Japan, Russia, China, South Africa, Ghana, Peru, Finland, you name it -- you can choose the country or culture the music comes from. -4. After choosing the specific music piece you want to discuss, NEXT take time to look up information online about the musical STYLE that the music represents. For example ' be bop' or ' cool jazz' or Baroque music,' or 'reggae, or ' Galliard from the Baroque Era,' or ' classical Indian,' or other styles -- make sure you can NAME the musical style and that it is accurate. For example, ' swing' would not be accurate if the music is ' rhythm n' blues.'  Be sure you know / find out what the style is. -5. Find at least 2 authoritative sources that describe the 'style' the music is written in (not just about that specific piece).-6. Quote and use the 2 soures in your essay, to discuss ' what is the style of the music that I have chosen.'-7. THEN write several paragraphs about the specific music piece you have chosen.-8. Answer questions including: a) Who wrote the piece? b) What is the composer/ songwriter known for overall?  b) When was the music written ?  e.g. in 2020, in 1755, 'around 1886' etc. c) Describe the music itself, for example, how long is it in minutes, how many sections does it have? Is it instrumental, or includes voice and lyrics? -9. What is the ' instrumentation' (e.g. voice and guitar, string quartet, koto and shamisen, ) ) Describe how the music 'unfolds'  (for example, " first there is a solo entrance by the flute; then the orchestra builds from quiet solo flute, and the strings and horns enter, the first movement is quite, second is slow and louder, the third movement is very loud, it ends with a cymbal crash.)  If it is folk music, also describe the sections and instruments, etc.  -10. How would you say the musical work 'tells a story' and what is the story that is told through the music?-Use at least 4 quotations (these can be short) directly from your SOURCEs -- use "direct quotes"  with in-text citations.
