5 Essay Question about U.S. diplomatic history

1) How did the United States become involved in the imperial game between the late 19th   and early 20th centuries?  What social, political, and economic forces motivated U.S. policy during this period?

2) With the end of World War I, Woodrow Wilson hoped to change the ways nations behaved in the international arena.  What did Wilson believe needed to be changed in international relations as well as U.S. foreign policy?  How successful was he at implementing his desired changes? 

3) Soon after the end of World War II, a rising fear of Soviet expansionism and communism swept the United States.  How did the U.S. government respond to this fear during the late 1940s and early 1950s?  How did it change U.S. policy towards the rest of the world? What kind of institutions did the government create to deal with this perceived threat?  Be sure to include examples from Hixon’s book.

4) How did the Roosevelt Administration view the threat from Germany and Japan to the survival of the United States during the early 1940s?  How did the administration work around neutrality laws and the neutrality sentiment within American society during this period? 

5) Was the United States an isolationist country from 1920-1940?  Be sure to support your assertion with examples from each decade of this 20-year period.

Please answer all of the five questions with five separate essays. 

Each essay requires four to five paragraphs with analytical thesis instead of descriptions. No citation needed, but in-depth analysis is important.
