  1. A diabatic compressed air energy storage (CAES) system stores compressed air in an underground salt cavern. To release stored energy, the compressed air is released and expanded through a turbine. A natural gas burner is used to heat the expanding air leaving the reservoir. The CAES system has a round trip efficiency of 30% and requires 1.5 MWh of thermal energy from the natural gas burner to generate 1 MWh of electricity. A natural gas burner is used to heat the expanding air leaving the reservoir with a heat transfer efficiency of 90% based on higher heating value. The natural gas fueling the burner is 70% carbon by weight and has a higher heating value of 53.5 MJ/kg. What are the average carbon emissions per MWh of electricity from the CAES system due to the gas burner (MgCO2/MWhelec)?
