QUESTION

A tank of nitrogen has a volume of 14.0 L and a pressure of 760.0 mm Hg. Find the volume of the nitrogen when its pressure is changed to 400.0 mm Hg while the temperature is held constant.

In this question Pressure and volume are given and we are asked to find out that what would be the new volume when pressure is changed from one value to another.

Remember that you have to plug into the equation the values of volume and pressure in a very specific way. The pressure and volumes come in connected pairs and you must put them in the proper place. We will use the Boyle' law equation;

Using equation;

##P_1## ##V_1## = ##P_2## ##V_2##

##P_1## = 760 mm Hg , ##V_1## = 14 L

##P_2## = 400 mm Hg , ##V_2## = ?

plug in the values;

760 mm Hg x 14 L = 400 mm Hg x ##V_2##

multiply and divide:

10640 mm Hg L = 400 mm Hg x ##V_2##

##V_2## = 10640 mm Hg L / 400 mm Hg

## V_2## = 26.6 L
