1. Explain the following concepts in your own words:
Define the following key terms:
(a) cell;
(b) main effect; and
(c) interaction.
(d) What is the difference between a one-way and a two-way ANOVA?
(e) When looking at a graph of an A x B interaction, describe the pattern that indicates that the interaction is possibly significant.
(f) State four assumptions for the two-way ANOVA and explain what each of them means.
(g) Explain the order of interpretation for a two-way between subjects ANOVA.
(h) Explain why the critical value can be different for each hypothesis test computed using the two-way between subjects ANOVA.
(i) What are the three steps used to analyze a significant interaction?
2. State the total number of groups for each of the following examples of a two-way between subjects ANOVA:
(a) A psychologist administers a small, medium, or large dose of a drug to a sample of mice (Factor A: drug dose) and measures reward seeking behavior in three experimental trials. (Factor B: trials).
(b) An industrial organizational psychologist measures the GPA among men and women graduate students (Factor A: gender) with low, medium, or high leadership potential (Factor B: leadership potential).
3. Identify each factor and the levels of each factor in this example:
A psychotherapist asks a sample of violent and nonviolent criminals from impoverished, middle-class, and upper-class backgrounds to indicate how accountable they feel they are for their crimes.
4. State the decision regarding the null hypothesis for each of the following ANOVA tests at a .05 level of significance. Explain how you arrived at your answers. What do the numbers in the parentheses mean?
(a) F(3,24) = 3.29
(b) F(2,40) = 3.00
(c) F(1,120) = 4.00
(d) F(2,60) = 3.10
5. Data Interpretation and Presentation:
Kim and Park (2014). Attitudes toward Suicide.
Kim and Park (2014) conducted a between subjects study with three groups (Non-Korean students in US; Korean students in the US; and Korean students in Korea) and two genders (male and female). The total number of participants in the study = 361. A series of two-way 3 x 2 between subjects ANOVAs with 3 participant groups and 2 genders (male or female) were run to determine if there were significant differences between groups with regard to attitudes about suicide. Attitudes included: that suicide is 1) permissible, 2) unpredictable, 3) preventable, and 4) it is right to try to prevent suicide.
Review the data in the attachment below and write the findings of the study in APA format using these data. Hint: Determine if there were any main effects and interactions that demonstrated significance and present those findings. Include the effect sizes. Then discuss the post hoc findings of the significant findings. Include in your discussion of the post hoc findings the significance, and the means and standard deviations of the groups that were significantly different. You can also include discussion of the main effects and interactions that were not significant.
