After reading each situation, write thoughts/views of the situation:

Situation #1 Bob and Jane were living together. They both decided that they wanted to have a child, but Jane could not conceive. Jane and Bob both went to their physicians and had infertility workups. The physician found that Bob had a low sperm count and informed Bob and Jane. Bob refused to believe the results and said a mistake had been made. Two weeks later, Jane asks her physician to artificially inseminate her with donor sperm and requested that he keep this confidential, because she intended to let Bob believe the child was his. Jane pleaded with the physician saying she knew Bob would end their relationship if Bob was unable to impregnate her. What is your opinion of the situation?

Situation #2 Suppose that a parent tests positive for the gene of a particular disease and refuses to tell his children. Should the genetics counselor who performed the test break the parent's confidentiality? Is that ethical behavior? Explain your thoughts.

Situation #3 Mrs. Smith, a young woman 35 years of age with two children, is a member of the Jehovah's Witness faith. After a serious automobile accident, she has internal bleeding that appears to be life threatening. The physician wishes to transfuse the patient in order to stabilize her so that exploratory surgery can be done and the bleeding halted. The patient refuses the treatment, based on her belief that it would be against the will of God. What are your thoughts on this?

Situation #4 The case of Behringer v. Medical Center, at Princeton, New Jersey, dealt with an HIV-infected surgeon who was allowed to practice. Upon finding out that the staff member was infected, the hospital allowed the physician to continue practice but limited his performance to procedures that posed no risk for HIV transmission. What are your thoughts on this? Situation #5 Jane is pregnant, 23 years old, unmarried, and the mother of four children by three different fathers. She has been an insulin-dependent diabetic since the age of 12 but had no complications from the disease during earlier pregnancies. During clinic visits, Jane has been advised of the risks of uncontrolled diabetes for her unborn child, (increased risk for congenital deformities, premature birth, and being stillborn) but does not seem to take the advice seriously. When questioned about how she is monitoring her blood sugar, she complains that she is too poor to buy the test strips, and even when she has the supplies, she often forgets. At 15 weeks' gestation, following an office visit, she is admitted to the hospital as an inpatient to treat her diabetes. The next day, against medical advice, she checks herself out of the hospital even though her blood sugars are still not under control. Once at home, she again fails to monitor her blood sugar adequately.

At 20 weeks' gestation, Jane is again admitted to the hospital as her diabetes is again out of control. The next morning, she again announces that she wishes to check out. She is once again advised her actions are clearly not in the best interest of the fetus. Jane responds negatively to the advice and becomes belligerent, demanding to be released. Who has rights? Jane? The fetus? The hospital staff?

Situation #6 Several traditional populations do not donate organs at the same rate as the majority population in the United States. There are many reasons for this, including in some cases a cultural need for body integrity following death. Given that these groups have decided not to provide organs, should they receive organs on the same basis as groups that more readily donate them? Why or why not?

Situation #7 A physician refuses to accept any more Medicaid patients for medical care. Do you believe it is the physician's right?
