• "A Brief History of the Supply Side" Cook discusses various trends related to alcohol consumption between the 1900-1930s. He also discusses the lessons of prohibition. For this weeks discussion question, discuss whether or not you believe prohibition was a success. Then, review the "Alcohol Facts and Statistics", which gives a more current view of alcohol related issues in the United States. What facts or statistics stood out or surprised you after reading it? A Primer, includes a detailed analysis of populations and drinking patterns. Cook deciphers the rates of “any drinking” and “binge drinking” for various populations and groups using a NESARC survey from 2001-2002. For this week’s DQ, search the internet and select one of the following; Gender, Age, Race, Education, or Income and how the demographic you selected relates to binge drinking. For example, women and binge drinking, hispanics and binge drinking, high school students and binge drinking etc. Locate one source and summarize the findings. Look for a source that is more recent than the NESARC study that Cook provided. Along with the summary, include your thoughts and reflections on what you found. Feel free to use any outside resources or personal experiences to help support your response. (2pages)You read several ways to diagnose and assess alcohol use and dependency in individuals. One of the important models you read about was James Prochaska and Carlos DiClemente's stages of change. These stages of change are an integrative, biopsychosocial model to conceptualize the process of intentional behavior change. For this week's discussion question, summarize the 5 stages of change. Then, discuss which stage you think would be the most difficult for a person and why. Feel free to use outside sources or use examples from the Shattered Spirits film you watched for your paper this week if needed. (2pages)Cook states “Enforcing DUI and criminal laws is a costly enterprise. At some point the costs to the public of additional enforcement become greater than the gain on terms of reduced crime, violence, and reckless driving”(p. 150). While policy makers and activist are attempting to tackle the issue of DUI, each state in the US has their own rules and regulations in terms of penalties for DUIs. For this week’s discussion question, pick a state within the US and research the penalties for receiving a DUI in that state. Include distinctions between things like # of offenses, monetary fines, possible jail time, license revocation, etc. Also, what are some other organizations out there attempting to address the issue of drunk driving? MADD and RID are wonderful organizations targeting this issue but there are others. Find at least one other organization and describe it for the class.
