Contrast the chosen ankle motion from step two below. Determine whether this motion or activity, chosen by your peers, could lead to injury. What precautions could be taken to minimize the risk for injury? must be a minimum of 100 words.
Briefly discuss the functions of the hip, knees, ankles, and feet.Hips- Serves as the weight-bearing and walking activities. The hip is also known for being a stable joint which allows for some range of motion. Knees- The knee is very complex which is supported and maintained by muscles and ligaments therefore it has no bony stability. The motions the knee has is flexion and extension. The knee bears majority of the body's weight, and helps with walking, bending, running, and other physical activities. Ankles- The ankle allows dorsiflexion and plantar flexion. The ankle is also used as a shock absorber as the heel of the foot strikes the ground at the beginning of a stance.Feet- The foot serves as a stable base of support to propel the body forward. The feet also provides mobility and stability as the body moves.Select one of the ankle motions, as outlined in your text (Chapter 20, p.304) and describe a movement or activity requiring this specific motion.Dorsiflexion is used when sprinting. Dorsiflexion in when you bring the top of the foot towards your shin. Analyze the anatomical relationship between the ankle and foot for this particular movement or activity. The foot and ankle works together by shortening the distance between the toes, and ankle and will contract the muscles of the shin primarily the tibialis anterior muscle (Kelliher, 2014). The main function of the dorsiflexion during this activity is to shorten the lever represented by the leg below the knee. When the sprinter pushes off with the rear foot it will rise off the ground, the sprinter should dorsiflex it as he/she brings it forward, keeping in tight under his/her hips (Kelliher, 2014).Select two common ankle or foot pathologies and determine which movement or activity could be the cause for these injuries.Shin splints- is one of the pathologies. Shin splints is due to exercise-induced pain along the medial edge of the tibia, which is a few inches above the ankle and midway up the tibia (Lippert, 2011). Shin splints can be caused by running on a hard surface, running on your tip toes, and sports can involve a lot of jumping (Lippert, 2011).Turf Toe- can be caused by playing sports such as football, soccer, and baseball. The cause for turf toe is forced hyperextension of the great toe which is located at the MTP joint (Lippert, 2011).
