ASSIGNMENT:

One very important communication skill is the ability to express yourself clearly and professionally. This involves having a clear main idea, grouping and ordering supporting information in a logical way, using clear language, and using clear visual design. It also involves selecting key information and presenting it as efficiently as possible. Fo this assignment, you will synthesize several sources of information into a clear and professional informational email.

 Scenario

You are a manager at a company called HyperTec. This morning, an employee came to your office to report a problem with a coworker. Throughout the meeting, you learn several disturbing facts that may open up the company to a sexual harassment lawsuit.

For this assignent, you will take the role of Bill Schule, the Senior Manager. (Please use your own name in the written document.)

Chronology of the Events

  1. Randall Keene came to your office for an unannounced meeting. In this meeting, he discussed a problematic situation with a coworker named Abby Willsby. (Watch the video.)
  2. After Randall left your office, you opened your email program and read the emailmessages that Abby Willsby had copied to you. (Read the dossier.)
  3. You then immediately contacted the HR Department and talked to Mr. Ambar Patel, Director of Human Resources. In that conversation, Mr. Patel expressed serious concern about the liability the company has for a potential sexual harassment lawsuit.
  4. At the end of your conversation, Mr. Patel asked you to email him a summary of the situation that identifies all the salient facts of the case. Mr. Patel emphasized that this was to be an informational document only. He did not want your opinion on the matter as this would be for HR to decide after a full investigation.

This document will be used by HR to initiate an investigation of sexual harassment charges; it will be retained in both Randall Keene and Abby Willsby's personnel files; and it may be used as evidence if sexual harassment charges are officially filed against the company.
