Answer the two multi-part essay questions below, using information presented during our 12/6 class meeting. Information obtained from external sources will not be counted. 1. A. Describe (in detail) the social determinants of health, as presented during class. B. Using your own words, describe (in detail) patterns in the social determinants, and in health outcomes (for example, life expectancy) across the Bronx. You can refer to data covered during class, but you need to describe patterns in your own words. C. Describe what social structures are, in detail. D. What are the social structures underlying the social determinants you discussed in part B?

 2. A. Using your own words, what is structural competency?  B. How is the structural competency approach different from more standard approaches? C. After tending to the patient’s immediate needs for clinical care, what questions might a clinician ask the patient described below? What (beyond providing immediate care) might a clinician try to understand about-- or try to do for—this patient?

 Brief Patient Summary: Male patient appears to be between 20 - 25 years old, and speaks limited English. The patient is very thin, wearing dirty clothing, and smells heavily of alcohol. He has fresh cuts and bruises all over his body, which appear to indicate some sort of physical trauma. He was brought to the ER by a good samaritan, who saw him bleeding and curled up on the ground outside a subway station in midtown Manhattan. Patient’s legs were covered in muddy blankets.
