12. IMPRESSIONISM (France, 1865–1885) Characteristics: abundant bright colors, large loose brushstrokes, emphasized natural light, subject matter of landscapes and scenes of everyday life.

13. POSTIMPRESSIONISM (France, 1885–1910) Characteristics: subject matter of landscapes and scenes of everyday life, individual artistic styles which included pointillism (small dots of color next to each other), swirling brushstrokes, geometric patches of color.

14. FAUVISM (France, 1900–1908) Characteristics: flattened perspective, bright non-naturalistic/arbitrary colors, outlined shapes, meant to be fun.

15. EXPRESSIONISM (Germany, 1905–1935) Characteristics: expression of inner feelings, distorted people and places, powerful clashing colors, high contrast.

16. CUBISM (France, 1908–1920s) Characteristics: subject matter broken down into colorful loose-fitting angular shapes, subject matter broken down into rearranged monochromatic angular shapes, multiple points of view shown at the same time.

17. DADA (Switzerland 1915–1922) Characteristics: mocked traditional culture, called for the destruction of traditional art and values, used pre-made objects, unusual juxtaposition.

18. SURREALISM (1924-1940s) Characteristics: realistic representation of subject matter with unrealistic characteristics or interactions, represented Freud’s theories, subject matter of dreams and visions of the irrational unconscious mind.

19. ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM (USA, 1940s–1950s) Characteristics: large-scale, nonrepresentational, gestural application of paint (shows the action of the artist), messy, unframed.
